CG Says:

New to the Volvo U.S. lineup for the 2021 model year, the all-electric XC40 Recharge enjoys a number of updates for the 2022 model year. You can read our full report of the 2021 model here.

For the new year, the XC40 Recharge is offered in three new trim levels: Twin, Twin Plus, and topline Twin Ultimate. Only one trim level was offered in 2021. Range is improved for 2022 as well. The 2021 XC40 was EPA rated to travel 208 miles on a full charge, the 2022 is now rated at 223.

In Consumer Guide testing—during a period of battery-friendly mild temperatures—we saw range estimates as high as 280 miles, credible results based on our evaluation.

Our top-trim Twin Ultimate enjoyed a premium-level cabin, trimmed in high-quality material and plenty of soft-touch surfaces. Indeed, the entire drive experience is polished, with ride quality, sound levels, and audio-system performance all worthy of luxury vehicles costing much more than our test car.

As we’ve noted in the past, the XC40 Recharge isn’t especially sporty, with lifeless steering feel, and demonstrating considerable lean in corners. That said, Volvo’s small electric crossover is fast—very fast. It’s quick from a stop and around town, and makes easy work of passing and merging chores.

One big plus is the XC40’s roomy cabin. Our big and tall test drivers found plenty the Volvo easy to get in and out of, and comfortable even on trips.
