DOE unveils US$139m in technology funding | Automotive Industry News

US Secretary of Energy, Dan Brouillette has introduced US$139m in Federal funding for 55 tasks throughout the country, which will assistance new and superior motor vehicle technologies.

6 of these tasks will be led by groups in Michigan.

“Technological innovation is key to revitalising America’s manufacturing competitiveness, in particular in the transportation sector,” claimed Secretary Brouillette. “I’m energized to announce six of the 55 whole tasks will be led by groups right here in Michigan, a Condition that has been the spine of the American auto field for years.

“The Trump Administration is fully commited to investing in technologies that increase accessibility to affordable mobility and give customers with a broad range of transportation solutions to meet their needs.”

Funded via the US Office of Energy’s (DOE’s) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), tasks will carry out investigation in superior batteries, electrification, and manufacturing in assistance of DOE’s Energy Storage Grand Obstacle.

Announced by Secretary Brouillette in January, 2020, the Energy Storage Grand Challenge is a method to generate and sustain US function in electrical power storage know-how, utilisation and exports.

Among the the tasks introduced, EERE’s Vehicle Technologies Office (VTO) and EERE’s Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO) are collaborating on two tasks totalling US$15m aimed at lightweight and higher-efficiency fibre-bolstered polymer composites for motor vehicle purposes.

Initial, a Ford-led staff, in collaboration with DOE’s Oak Ridge Countrywide Laboratory and other companions, will produce multi-useful composite structures with electronics integration for cross vehicle beam purposes.

2nd, a Typical Motors-led staff is establishing fibre-bolstered composites for higher quantity manufacturing of structural battery enclosures. Michigan Condition University’s Scale Up Analysis Facility is partnering with each groups.

The facility was set up with DOE funding through the Institute for Highly developed Composites Manufacturing Innovation.

Selected tasks in this funding option will be managed by VTO.

VTO investigation pathways focus on fuel diversification, motor vehicle efficiency, electrical power storage, lightweight materials and new mobility technologies, to enhance the general electrical power efficiency and affordability of the transportation technique.
